District Governor 5CW - Howard Steinley
District Governor Howard Steinley .My life began in the Herbert Hospital many years ago, I went to High School in Herbert and now I am proud to be a member of the Herbert Lions Club.

Most of my life has been spent on the family dairy farm at Rush Lake, just 10 miles west of Herbert. I left long enough to receive a Diploma in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan and to work for two and half years for the Health of Animals Department, Government of Canada in Lloydminster.

In 1966 I came back to dairy farming with my wife Adeline who has been a teacher with the school and Regional College system. Our three boys who were raised on the farm and their families are living close by. This gives us the wonderful opportunity to enjoy our 5 grandchildren.

Volunteering in community and farming organizations has been a major part of my life. I have been involved with 4 H for over 40 years as a participant, leader and parent. At the local level I have been on various recreation and church boards, dairy and farm related organizations. I have received a Saskatchewan Distinction award for work with the Recreation Board, Life Membership in the Saskatchewan Dairy Association and the Queen’s Commemorative Medal for community service.

When I retired from dairy farming, I found that I had some spare time to devote to other activities. I chose to become a member of the Herbert Lion’s Club. In the Herbert Club I have been first and second vice president, president for two terms and treasurer for two terms. I have served as a Cabinet member for 4 years and zone chairman for 1 year. I was humbled and appreciative of the opportunity to serve as Vice District Governor and District Governor for 2007 – 2008.

My special interest will be to encourage local clubs to look for projects that will make Lionism fun while serving the community and promoting International Programs.

“Dare to Change’ is the Lions slogan for this year. We all know that change is often difficult. Most of us have “been there and done that”. It would be foolish to leave all the old and tried ways totally behind, but we can bend, extend and lend ourselves to continue the legacy we have inherited.
